Steven Winter Associates, Inc. is a 38-year-old architectural/engineering research and consulting firm, with specialized expertise in technologies and procedures that improve the safety, performance, and cost effectiveness of buildings. SWA’s staff that encompasses over 65 architects, engineers, and building scientists works to make buildings safer, more energy efficient, more durable, more affordable, more accessible, and overall, more sustainable.
SWA’s multi-disciplinary skills allow the firm to approach building performance from a “whole building” perspective. The ability to evaluate multiple aspects of a building, and to consider the inter-relationships between various building components, allows SWA to be highly effective in its projects.
As building systems consultants on the built environment, we took the “whole building” approach to incorporating energy and resource efficiency measures into a wide variety of building types: residential, multifamily, commercial, educational, and institutional as well as community building projects.
The range of services we offer include: Building system assessment; green materials and products specifications; green building commissioning; LEED assessments and certification; indoor air quality analysis and testing; solar and PV design and engineering; building science forensic investigations; HVAC troubleshooting and implementation of new building technologies and design; accessibility conformance, builder/operator training, and preparation of green guidelines and performance criteria. In addition to traditional energy auditing capabilities, SWA also has a unique experience in high performance MEP design, energy analysis and modeling (DOE-2, CFD, daylighting and others); and economic calculations and presentation of findings to decision makers are services at the core of SWA’s business interests and staff expertise.
SWA has extensive expertise in a wide range of technical fields, and has worked with a large variety of clients: homeowners, building owners and developers; architects and engineers; building system manufacturers; code officials and regulatory bodies; professional associations; utility companies; federal, state, and local governments; and independent governmental agencies.
