Improving the Built Environment through Research, Design, and Technology

Sustainable Buildings Industry Council

SWA has provided management services to the Sustainable Buildings Industry Council (SBIC) since the 1980s. Originally called the Passive Solar Industries Council, the organization focused on energy efficient home design. The Council’s Board and members have subsequently worked to define and promote the whole building approach to design, construction, and O&M. This new way of thinking encompasses traditional sustainability concepts in context with other design objectives such as accessibility, security, cost/benefit, durability, and more. SBIC’s tag line Beyond Green™ captures the spirit.

SBIC is an independent, nonprofit organization whose mission is to unite and inspire the building industry toward higher performance through education, outreach, advocacy and the mutual exchange of ideas. Under SWA’s management, SBIC has partnered with federal agencies, national laboratories, state agencies, and many industry organizations, giving its members the ability to make a difference far beyond what any individual, group, or company could accomplish alone.

The result is a large portfolio of practical, user-friendly, award-winning building design guidelines, energy-simulation software packages, resource documents, training programs, videos, and websites.
