Project Example: Structural Insulated Panel Association

Ribbon Cutting for a structurally Insulated Panel HomeSWA helped form this trade association and provided staff support during its first 10 years. Beginning as a group of small producers, SIPA members and board worked closely with SWA staff to develop a sound technical base for SIPs and built a robust marketing program for the industry. SWA’s expertise in building technologies proved invaluable to this industry trade association. We helped set-up and oversee a testing program, and secure code approvals for the technology. Under SWA’s management, SIPA developed testing protocols, conducted demonstration projects, developed and delivered training workshops, and helped research and document both the structural and thermal performance of SIPs. SWA’s expertise in public outreach helped SIPA achieve a notable presence in the 1990s at the annual NAHB International Builder’s Show, where for several years a full-size SIP house was constructed to showcase this exciting, emerging technology.

Structural insulated panels (SIPs) are a unique building system with high thermal value, durability, and sound attenuation properties. SWA helped SIPA take a product that was an innovative building system from its early years into a mature, accepted technology.
