Accessible Design of the Historic City Market at O
Project Background:
O Street Market, a historical landmark in Washington, DC, was recently restored into an award winning mixed-use community. Now named City Market at O, the project spans two city blocks and will have close to 600 residential units when complete, 87,000 square feet of retail space, and 116,000 square feet of hotel space. With its wide range of condominium, rental, and senior housing units, the project has served as a catalyst for growth in the District’s burgeoning Shaw neighborhood.
City Market at O is one of the District’s most revered projects and the recipient of multiple awards, including, among others, the 2015 Merit in Architecture Award from the American Institute of Architects and the 2015 Residential Design Award form Washingtonian Magazine.
Project Services:
Steven Winter Associates, Inc. (SWA) worked closely with the architectural team from Shalom Baranes Associates to ensure that the project was built in compliance with federal accessibility laws and local building codes, including the Fair Housing Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, and the DC Building Code. SWA consultants conducted plan reviews during the design stage, performed field inspections during construction, and offered technical assistance throughout all phases of design and construction. SWA delivered guidance to ensure that all facets of City Market at O would be accessible without compromising the historical integrity of the original building site.
