The Tannery – Where Luxury Meets Accessibility
Project Background:
Originally constructed in the early nineteenth century, The Tannery recently underwent a transformation from a vacant factory to an upscale, mixed-use community. Seamlessly integrated into the picturesque town of Glastonbury’s business district, The Tannery features townhouse-style homes, three mid-rise apartment buildings, and a social center with over 6,000 square feet of commercial space including a restaurant — all situated on 32 acres of preserved land. The focal point of this renovation is the original tannery building, which now serves as luxury apartment rentals.
Project Services:
Working closely with developers, architects, civil engineers and contractors, the Accessibility Team at Steven Winter Associates, Inc. (SWA) provided compliance and consulting services.
The team conducted extensive plan reviews and onsite construction inspections throughout the entirety of the project to ensure that the residential units, common spaces, and the site are fully compliant with the accessible design and construction requirements of the Fair Housing Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, and local building code.
The large and considerably sloped site provided a unique challenge to achieving compliant site access. The designers were able to employ creative solutions to construct a fully accessible development that is both visually appealing and cost effective.
