Project Background:

The Engineering and Science Building at the University of Connecticut in Storrs, CT achieved LEED Silver
certification under the US Green Building Council’s (USGBC) LEED NC rating system. The building provides new laboratory and classroom space to meet the needs of expanding STEM research and development at the University.

The design of the building’s wastewater treatment system uses innovative technologies to minimize the demand for potable water use for sewage conveyance, as well as for landscape irrigation. The walkable design of the building’s site decreases the demand for automobile use and promotes human health and well-being. The abundance of open and vegetated space on the site creates habitat for various forms of biodiversity, as well as improves the well-being of building occupants.

Project Services:

Steven Winter Associates, Inc. (SWA), acting as the Sustainability Consultants for the project, worked with
the design team to address each area of LEED compliance, making recommendations for achieving the
desired LEED credits as well as calibrated the energy model for the project

Energy Conservation Features:

The project building optimized its energy performance by pursuing the following energy saving measures:
Reducing Lighting Power Density, Installing high R-value insulation, installing a high SRI value roof (>78), and
installing high efficiency glazing on building widows. The project saved 21% more energy as compared to the baseline case.
