Hotels and the Americans with Disabilities Act: Design and Construction Compliance
Course Description: Learn about the new 2010 Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Standards for Accessible Design, which became mandatory on March 15, 2012, with a focus on the differences between the new design standard and the former ADA Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG) as they apply to places of lodging. This course will provide an overview of the ADA’s nondiscrimination policies and procedures as they relate to the operation and management of hotels and other places of lodging. Emphasis will be placed on working with guests with disabilities, including how to assess and respond to reasonable accommodation requests. Scoping requirements and technical accessibility regulations of the ADA will be briefly covered as they pertain to operations and management.
Learning Objectives:
- Gain a brief introductory knowledge of the accessibility laws and codes, specifically the ADA.
- Be able to distinguish between new construction, alteration and barrier removal requirements of the ADA.
- Learn about important scoping changes applicable to lodging facilities.
- Be able to recite some of the key technical changes found in the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design.
