Alexion Achieves LEED Platinum
Alexion
Project Background:
Alexion is a global biopharmaceutical company focused on developing and delivering life-transforming therapies for patients with devastating and rare disorders. Alexion has utilized a variety of green building strategies and materials to enhance the aesthetic value and environmental-sensitivity of the space and affirms their commitment to human health and wellbeing.
Project Services:
SWA provided sustainability advising and consulting during design and construction, commissioning of mechanical systems, and certification services to aid Alexion’s pursuit of LEED Platinum. By incorporating some of the measures outlined below, in addition to other sizable efforts, the project has received a Platinum rating from the U.S. Green Building Council’s (USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program.
Primary Energy Conservation Measures:
The project accrued points in three key categories to reach the highest level of achievement in the LEED program. Superior design strategies such as engineering a whole building daylight sensor-based LED lighting system, designing for water saving fixtures and appliances and offsetting 100% of source energy use through Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) reduced the environmental footprint of the building.
The central downtown location also played a significant role in achieving Platinum. The new building is one phase in a broader urban revitalization effort in New Haven, including the improvements to infrastructure and amenities within the project boundary, and the College Street pedestrian and bicycle paths. Furthermore Alexion actively participates in a comprehensive Travel Demand Management Plan (TDM) to encourage building occupants to seek alternate commuting arrangements, reduce their number of trips during the peak hours, and forego parking in the on-site parking garage.
