Massachusetts Sheriff’s Correctional Centers
Existing Facility Audits, Technical Assistance
Background:
The Division of Capital Asset Management and Maintenance (DCAMM) works with state agencies to create and manage forward-thinking sustainable buildings to meet the needs of the citizens they serve. DCAMM partners with agencies to help them meet their strategic needs with fiscally responsible building and real estate solutions.
Services:
Steven Winter Associates, Inc. (SWA) is retained by DCAMM to provide accessibility consulting services on various state projects.
For this particular project, SWA conducted accessibility audits of 11 existing Correctional Centers located throughout the state of Massachusetts. Working with different counties and Sheriff’s departments, SWA assessed all facilities for compliance with the accessible design and construction requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act and its referenced technical criteria, the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design, and the Massachusetts building code and its referenced technical criteria included in the 521 CMR Standard. All interior and exterior spaces open to the visitors, volunteers, or detainees/inmates, including medical facilities, areas for religious services, basketball courts, and recreational fields were included in SWA’s assessment.
