Gathering community insights for designing an accessible and inclusive outdoor pool that meets the diverse needs of people with disabilities.
Project Overview
SWA developed an electronic survey and conducted focus groups to gather input on the design of an outdoor instructional pool facility that accommodates people with physical disabilities, limited mobility, developmental disabilities, and emotional and mental disabilities.
The YMCA’s scope of work specifically focused on gaining the perspectives of people with disabilities; family members and caregivers of people with disabilities; and professionals who provide services or support to the disability community. Insights from the survey informed a tailored focus group interview protocol, allowing SWA to delve deeper into the community’s needs, priorities, and preferences as current or potential pool users.
The community-driven recommendations significantly shaped design suggestions for key features of the facility, including pool entry options, layout, safety features, changing and bathing rooms, recreational elements, sensory design aspects, and general usage and intent.
Additionally, community priorities such as inclusivity and technological advancements were identified to guide decision-making throughout the design process, ensuring the facility would be welcoming, accessible, high-quality, and beneficial to all users.
