Project Overview

The Arsenal building has a longstanding history that predates the surrounding Central Park. Completed in 1851, the brick masonry building was constructed for the New York State militia, but it was quickly purchased by New York City for the creation of Central Park. The Arsenal was designated an official New York City landmark in 1967.

The Arsenal now serves as the headquarters of NYC Parks and the Central Park Zoo and is home to the Arsenal Gallery, which is open to the public.

SWA’s Enclosures team created a program and protocols for probes and testing, including a probe bid package, oversite on probe and testing, and conditions reporting with probe and test findings. Following the discovery and assessment phases, the team provided schematic design and design development services and delivered construction document packages.
